Facial Rejuvenation >> Earlobe Repair
Aesthetic Specialty Centre is one of only a few clinics in the country performing the most modern otoplasty techniques. Prominent ears are considered a distraction from the normal appearance, as indicated by psychological studies and scientific facial esthetics analysis. Nothing is more telling of this phenomenon than the ridicule endured by children with “Mickey Mouse ears” or “Dumbo ears.” Otoplasty offers a solution to this ridicule. Once the ears have taken full shape, which is usually around five to six years of age, otoplasty can be performed. We generally perform this procedure on children before they begin school to avoid ridicule.
Adults also can benefit from otoplasty. Large or asymmetric ears or lobes that are longer or shorter than the norm can damage a person’s self-confidence.
The surgeon usually begins the procedure by making incisions behind the ears and “pinning” them back. Occasionally some cartilage may be folded or removed. As the ear ages, cartilage becomes stiffer, sometimes requiring further surgery. If the ear is soft and pliable, as it usually is in younger patients, an incisionless otoplasty procedure can be performed. This procedure involves simply bending the ear to a less obvious shape with a suture and needle under local anesthesia. This is truly an innovative procedure offered at only a few clinics around the world.
Postoperatively, otoplasty patients may be required to wear a light, compressive dressing over the ears and follow simple instructions for incision care. Pain is usually very slight. Risks are minimal, but include infection and temporary bruising.
